Job websites have sprung up at a brisk pace due to the ability of jobs search engines to help connect those looking for work with companies seeking candidates for open positions. Often these employment sites focus on openings within certain industries, including the medical field, teaching, non-profit and non-public sector. Some websites serve the general job-seeking demographic, while other niche sites target a more specific audience of job seekers and job fields. In fact, a lot of experts advise applicants to narrow their search to industry-specific job opportunity websites. The boom in these niche websites has in turn given rise to sites that rank them in terms of various criteria. But as with any online service, there are both risks and rewards to using job posting boards. Know the job opportunities & risks in advance to save yourself from potential danger.
It is incumbent upon prospective job candidates to proceed with caution when supplying information on these job sites. Often, employment posting boards solicit resumes containing the job seeker's contact information, then turn around and sell access to this information to corporate headhunters and candidate recruiters. The benefits to the job posting site are obvious, but while the applicant may obtain an advantage in his quest for a job, he is also giving up control of confidential details, with no way to know or restrict where the information ultimately winds up. So although the resume containing this personal information might be read by a company that is hiring, it might also be read by the applicant's present boss or even by a con artist hoping to auction off this information or perhaps steal the unwitting job seeker's identity.
