Steps of Job Hunting

Resume Building

Preparation is key when you are looking for a job. Compile or update your resume to include your relevant education and experience. Consider the types of jobs that interest you and tweak your resume accordingly. Once this is done, you can start looking for a job.

Check Newspaper Classifieds

Check the classified listings in your local newspaper. While this was once a great way to find a job, today few available job openings are filled via classified ad placement. The best way to find a job these days is by networking. Let all your friends and relatives know that you are job hunting and let them know what type of jobs you are interested in.

Browse Online Job Websites

Check online sites that post job openings and post your resume on applicable sites. Visit the websites of companies that you know of that do the type of work you are interested in, and contact them directly. Many company websites have a section devoted to their current job openings. Even if you do not see a job opening posted that is ideal for you, it is possible to email your resume to the company along with a letter outlining your talents and asking if there might be an opening in the company for a person with your skills. Also consider signing up with a recruiter or an employment agency, as some companies only work with these types of companies to fill available positions.

Apply for Your Job Targets

Once you have located some job openings that you are interested in, you must apply. Check with the company to find out what their requirements are. Some allow you apply online either by filling out a form or emailing your resume. Others may want you to send them a hard copy of your application and/or resume my mail or fax. Whatever the company's prescribed procedure, be sure you follow it exactly. You do not want to start off on the wrong foot by showing them that you cannot follow instructions.

Interview Preparation

Once your applications have been submitted, companies that are interested in you will ask you to come for an interview. Usually this is done in person, although sometimes it can be handled via phone or Internet. Whatever form the interview takes, punctuality is essential. Be sure to wear business attire that is appropriate to the company at which you are interviewing. Take care with your grooming too. Before your appointment, you may want to rehearse how you would reply to some questions that are commonly asked during interviews so that you can reply confidently during the actual interview.

Post Interview Follow-up

At the conclusion of the interview, thank the interviewer for seeing you and shake hands before leaving. Always send a follow-up letter thanking the interviewer for seeing you, emphasizing why it would be beneficial to their company to hire you, and reinforcing your interest in the position. A week or so after the interview, you may also want to call to find out if a decision has been made.

If you follow these steps, eventually you should receive one or more job offers. Once you do, choose the one that suits you best, negotiate your salary and terms of employment, and get started at your new job.
